Milwaukee’s bar scene is built on a history of tied houses and you will see a few still operating on our Discover Iconic Milwaukee and Dive Bars of Milwaukee tours. Miller typically paid all license fees and taxes on their tied houses and handled routine maintenance (including privy-cleaning), and furnished the establishments from top to bottom. The most active breweries tended to build their tied houses in one main style, which is why a Gluek Brewing Company tied house in downtown can look similar to one built in northeast Minneapolis. The company was sold to Pabst in the 1950’s, and lives on in name only, similarly to Schlitz, as one of Pabst’s many contract-brewed brands. The former brewery in Milwaukee has been converted into lofts, much like the Best brewery in Chicago. This was especially attractive to brewing companies that were reeling from price wars and aggressive sales practices from competitors. Because of this, there was essentially no competition or choice for consumers, so retailers would oversell alcoholic products. When Prohibition was repealed in the 30s, each state placed tied-house laws in some form to prevent the occurrence of such oversaturation. In Minneapolis, the tied houses were concentrated in the city's liquor patrol districts, which included downtown, the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood and parts of northeast Minneapolis. It became common practice for breweries to snap up desirable land like corner lots on busy streets, either to build tied houses or to prevent competitors from building them. Some (usually poorly performing) pubs were sold off, but after various other maneuvers, the Big Six (or their derivatives) basically divorced themselves from their pub estates.
